Though getting inked in the monsoon is not recommended by tattoo experts, sometimes our impulses get the better of us. Thus, we've listed a few tips to keep in mind to best protect your skin and your tat.
Keep it covered:
A tattoo, much like an open wound, needs time to heal. Keeping your body art covered with a breathable bandage prevents potentially harmful airborne bacteria from infecting the skin around the tattoo. Keep the bandage on for at least two hours after leaving the tattoo parlour.
Watch for infections:
It's essential to keep an eye out for infections. Watch out for the symptoms like redness, a warm burning sensation, swelling and pus formation. Consult a doctor if one or more of these symptoms appear. Even a seemingly mild skin infection can lead to serious health conditions, including pneumonia and blood infections. To prevent infections, gently wash the area with a mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Pat the tattoo dry with a soft cloth or paper towel before applying a mild antibacterial cream.
Hydrate peeling skin:
If you observe peeling around the tattoo, you may want to apply a thin layer of lotion. Most importantly, do not peel the skin off. Experts advise against petroleum-based ointments as they may discolour tattoo.
Don't drown your tattoo:
While it is okay to shower the day you get your tattoo, getting into a pool, bathtub or hot tub is a very bad idea. Submerging the tattoo in water should be avoided for at least two weeks.
Protect it:
Prevent the colour on your tattoo from fading by diligently applying a sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) before exposing it to the sun.
